KiriCAN & Partners Join Oxfam Pacific for Capacity Assessment

In a meaningful step toward organizational growth and partnership strengthening, Oxfam in the Pacific recently facilitated a comprehensive Organization Capacity Assessment Tool (OCAT) session with KiriCAN (Kiribati Climate Action Network) and its dedicated network of NGO partners.

Oxfam Pacific utilized the OCAT, a tool developed by Oxfam in the Pacific as part of a The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) funded project aimed at strengthening the capacity of civil society groups across the Pacific region. The OCAT is designed to help organizations better understand their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to develop strategies that improve overall effectiveness and impact.

Leading the session was Mereseini Maafu from Oxfam Pacific, who worked closely with KiriCAN members to assess the organization’s internal capacity. The assessment placed particular emphasis on the review and alignment of critical policies, including the Safeguard Policy, Child Protection Policy, and Gender Policy.

But the process didn’t stop at internal reflection—partner organizations and KiriCAN members also had the opportunity to evaluate KiriCAN’s capacity from their own perspectives.

Through honest dialogue and collaborative discussion, they highlighted areas of strength, identified gaps, and shared valuable insights that will inform future planning and policy development.

This joint effort marked more than just a routine exercise. It symbolized a shared commitment to accountability, inclusiveness, and continuous improvement, laying the groundwork for a stronger and more resilient civil society network in Kiribati. With tools like OCAT and the support of partners like Oxfam Pacific, KiriCAN and its allies are better equipped to amplify community voices and lead transformative change in the region.
